SILENCIO
Carving in the face of an ex-granite quarry
Belalcazar, Spain
2014
Silencio is a site specific intervention in rural Spain and exists in the show as an archival print as well as remaining accessible to the public in Belalcazar by foot.
Silencio followed a development in our live work and our interest in the disruption of form where objects, environments and architecture hold the traces, tensions and energy of an event, rather than an active human observer. It was created whilst undertaking a 5 month awarded research period at La Fragua, where we worked with various sites of interest. Initially Intrigued by the cut in the land, the natural bleeding of minerals and the amphitheatre-like, but quiet and sculptural quality of the abandoned quarry, we further discovered it was forced to close due to a restriction on dynamite following the Madrid train bombings in 2004. This was the fate of many small quarries across Spain. Nearby the site, a former worker of the quarry opened up a memorial engraving business with his son. We employed the pair to return to the site and carve 'SILENCIO' into the face of the amphitheatre like walls, leaving the space permanently scarred by the ex workers with this ordered instruction.
